How to play Queens
- One queen per row. Every row holds exactly one queen.
- One queen per column. Every column holds exactly one queen.
- One queen per color region. Every colored area holds exactly one queen.
- Queens can’t touch. No two queens may be next to each other, including diagonally.
Tap a cell once to mark it with an X, twice to place a queen, and a third time to clear it. Drag across empty cells to X several at once. Queens that break a rule are highlighted in red, and the puzzle is solved the moment every queen is placed correctly. New to Queens? Queens puzzle strategy
- Start with the smallest region. A region of one or two cells pins its queen down almost immediately.
- X out around every queen. A queen rules out its whole row, its column, its region and the eight cells around it.
- Regions trapped in a row or column. If a region sits entirely inside one row, that row’s queen must be in that region, so X the rest of the row.
- Count regions against rows. If two regions fit entirely inside the same two rows (or columns), those rows belong to them. Clear every other cell in those rows.
- Test the touching rule. If every cell of a region touches the same outside cell, that cell can’t hold a queen.

Queens puzzle FAQ
What are the rules of the Queens puzzle?
Place exactly one queen in every row, every column and every color region. Two queens can never touch, not even diagonally. Each puzzle has exactly one solution.
When does the daily Queens puzzle change?
A new daily puzzle unlocks at midnight in your own time zone. Puzzles get bigger through the week: 7x7 on Monday and Tuesday, 8x8 midweek, 9x9 on Friday and Saturday and a 10x10 on Sunday.
Can I play more than one Queens puzzle a day?
Yes. Switch to Unlimited and pick Easy (5x5–6x6), Medium (7x7–8x8), Hard (9x9–10x10) or Expert (11x11–12x12). There are more than 1,500 puzzles, and you can play as many as you like.
Is this the same as LinkedIn’s Queens game?
It uses the same rules as the Queens game LinkedIn publishes each day, but our daily is a different grid. Once you’ve finished LinkedIn’s puzzle, Unlimited mode here lets you keep playing as long as you like.
Do I ever need to guess?
No. Every puzzle here has been checked by a solver to have exactly one solution, so you can always find the next move with logic alone.
How do X marks and Auto-X work?
Tap a cell once to mark it with an X (a cell that cannot hold a queen), tap again to place a queen, and a third time to clear it. Drag across empty cells to mark several at once. Turn on Auto-X to mark every cell a new queen rules out automatically.
Is there a Queens puzzle app?
Yes. Crowns is our Queens puzzle app for iPhone, iPad and Android. It has 1,500+ puzzles, a daily puzzle, streaks, hints and events, and it is free to download.
Is the Queens puzzle the same as the Eight Queens problem?
It is a cousin. The classic Eight Queens problem only asks that no two queens attack each other on a chessboard. The Queens puzzle adds color regions and changes the rule to "no touching", which makes it a deduction puzzle with a single answer. It is also known as a one-star Star Battle.
More logic puzzles
Queens is the same puzzle as our Crowns logic puzzle (queens are crowns there), which you can also play in the full-screen Crowns player. If you like Queens, try Binary Sudoku+, Norinori, LITS or browse all logic games.
