A tile can only be selected if it's "free" — meaning it has no tile on top of it and at least one open side (left or right). How to Play Butterfly Mahjong
Find Pairs
Identify two identical butterfly tiles on the board. Tiles must show the same butterfly pattern to match.
Free Tiles Only
A tile is "free" when nothing sits on top of it and it has an open left or right edge. Only free tiles can be selected.
Match to Clear
Click/tap two matching free tiles to remove them from the board. This may free new tiles underneath.
Clear the Board
Win by matching and removing every tile. The order you remove pairs matters — plan ahead.
Zen Mode
Play at your own pace with no timer. Focus on relaxation and careful matching.
Arcade Mode

Strategy & Solving Tips
While Butterfly Mahjong appears simple, strategic pair selection determines whether you can clear the entire board.
- Scan the entire board before making your first match — understand the layout and layering
- Prioritize matching tiles from the highest layers first, as they block the most other tiles
- If you see three identical tiles, consider which pair to match carefully — the wrong choice may strand the third tile
- Avoid matching tiles from the outer edges too quickly, as they're useful for accessing inner tiles later
- When stuck, look for tiles you might have overlooked — they could be partially hidden by neighboring tiles
- In arcade mode, develop a consistent scanning pattern (top to bottom, left to right) for speed

Is every layout solvable?
Our puzzles are generated to guarantee at least one valid solution path. However, choosing the wrong pairs can lead to an unsolvable state, which is where strategic planning matters.
What makes a tile "free"?
A tile must have no other tile sitting on top of it AND must have at least one open side (left or right). Both conditions must be met for selection.
What's the difference between Zen and Arcade modes?
Zen mode has no timer — play at your own relaxing pace. Arcade mode adds a countdown timer, turning the experience into a pattern-recognition speed challenge.
Is this the same as regular Mahjong?
