Color Links

Connect matching colors to fill the grid

Color Links (also known as Numberlink or Flow) is a path-connection logic puzzle where you draw lines between matching colored dots to fill every cell of the grid. Paths cannot cross or overlap, and every cell must be used. The challenge lies in figuring out how to route each path so that all pairs connect while leaving no gaps. It's a beautiful blend of spatial reasoning and logical planning that rewards creative thinking.

How to Play Color Links

Match the Pairs

Each color appears exactly twice on the grid. Your goal is to connect each pair with a continuous path.

Fill Every Cell

Paths must fill the entire grid. No cell can be left empty when the puzzle is complete.

No Crossing

Paths cannot cross each other or overlap. Each cell belongs to exactly one path.

Orthogonal Only

Paths move horizontally and vertically through adjacent cells. No diagonal connections allowed.

Start from Endpoints

Each path starts and ends at the colored dots. Work outward from these fixed points.

Think Globally

Consider the overall space allocation before drawing. A path that works locally might block another pair from connecting.

Strategy & Solving Tips

Solving Color Links requires thinking about space allocation across the entire grid, not just individual paths. These strategies help you plan effectively.

  • Connect pairs that are adjacent or very close first — their paths are usually short and constrained
  • Dots on the edge or in corners have limited directional options, making their paths more predictable
  • If two dots of the same color are on the same edge, their path likely runs along that edge
  • Count available cells: each path must use at least as many cells as the shortest Manhattan distance between its endpoints
  • Look for bottlenecks — narrow passages that only one path can use, forcing its route
  • When stuck, consider which paths need the most space and route those first to avoid running out of room

Color Links FAQ

Is every Color Links puzzle solvable without guessing?

Yes. Every puzzle has a unique solution that can be determined through spatial reasoning and logical deduction. If paths seem ambiguous, there's a constraint you haven't noticed yet.

What if I can't fill every cell?

If there are empty cells when all pairs are connected, at least one path is routed incorrectly. The solution requires all cells to be covered, so rethink your path routing.

Is this the same as the Flow Free app?

Color Links is based on the same puzzle type (Numberlink), which predates any specific app. The underlying logic puzzle has been enjoyed in newspapers and puzzle books for decades.

Do longer paths mean harder puzzles?

Not necessarily. Difficulty comes from the number of pairs and how tightly they interact. A puzzle with many short, interweaving paths can be much harder than one with a few long paths.
